Brush Lettering Expanded
This class will be a multi-faceted approach to signs and hand lettering by way of the brush. We will begin with in class lettering sessions to learn about some of the time honored techniques and methods, and explore how hand lettering continues to exist in the everyday. The second half of the course will include a field trip to look at letters, and we'll wrap up the course with an evening of refreshments, lettering, and discussion.
“Language is the unifying key ingredient in my practice, and quite possibly the reason why signs and sign painting have been such a powerful thread. Sign painting has functioned beyond a craft or an art form, it has instead become a conceptual tool. It is capable of being multi-functional with its place in fine art or as a method to provide a commercial service (hand-painting a sign for a commercial space.) The hand-painted sign stands out alongside the prevalent contemporary methods. In its ability to stand out it becomes a new disposition “opening up unique possibilities for making and use.” Sign painting’s role between craft, trade, hobby, and art practice is not fixed or predetermined, but it is in the versatility and liminality that I find it so valuable.”
