Holly Coley is a multi media artist whose work searches for ethereal moments through the use of color, space, and abstraction. In order to articulate moments of inner contemplation and light, Coley draws inspiration from oceans, astronomy, cartography, woods, plants, and environmental patterns. These process-based works include traditional water based media such as inks, watercolor, acrylic paint and gouache, but also incorporate more surprising and whimsical materials including glitter and gold leaf. The large-scale works are constructed with Arches watercolor paper stretched over wooden panels (no glue is used) and treated with a UV-resistant acrylic coating.
Holly Coley was born in Bellflower, California and holds a BFA from San Francisco State University. Her work has been exhibited in New York and San Francisco. She is currently the department head of ceramics at the Crucible in Oakland, where she teaches ceramics to children and adults.
Soft Explosions, works on paper by Holly Coley will be on view at the SoMA Grand through April 29, 2016 by appointment.
