Blau-Gold Teaching Fellowship

The Blau-Gold Studio Teaching Fellowship provides free studio workspace to a teaching artist in exchange for being an integral part of Root Division’s Studios Program. In large part, the commitment involves teaching classes one to two afternoons per week at one of our Youth Education partner program sites. Working as a teaching-artist in residence for the full school year, the BGSTF plans a curriculum and develops a series of accessible, relevant, and fun projects for the students at a local school site.

The Blau-Gold Studio/ Teaching Fellowship (BGSTF) was initiated by a gift from the estate of the late Lonny Darwin, a supporter of education and the arts. The Fellowship, named for Ms. Darwin’s late mother, Emmy Blau- Gold, is designed to support an emerging artist for one year by providing free studio space and a monetary stipend.

Here is a sample project from our 2019-20 Blau Gold Studio Teaching Artist Fellow, Danielle Nanni  and her students 3rd -5th Grade at Cesar Chavez Elementary School.

Instructor: Danielle Nanni

Cesar Chavez Elementary School

Project Title: Symbolic Reflections
Students: 3rd - 5th Grade
Materials: Foil, wood stylus tools, pencils, paper, and permanent markers

About the Project: For this project, Symbolic Reflections, third through fifth grade students at Cesar Chavez Elementary School reflected on their own identities and chose symbols to represent themselves. Students began by interpreting examples of hojalatas (an artistic tradition of making designs with sheet metal from Mexico) for inspiration, and then made a personal connection to the craft by creating iconography that related to their personalities and interests. Students were also encouraged to experiment with line quality and texture by embossing their foil creations.
