Updates re: COVID-19

Thursday, May 7, 2020: Update on New Growth 2020

In honor of what would have been our 15th Annual New Growth: Youth Education Showcase & Free Family Arts Workshop this May, we're bringing you clips from the classrooms to brighten your days. Root Division’s Youth Education Program trains and places artists to teach free art classes in 9 after school partner sites. Projects explore a variety of media including painting, sculpture, printmaking, and film and connect artists with children and teens in under-resourced communities.

This past year, Root Division provided art classes and workshops at language-immersion schools -- Bessie Carmichael Elementary, Filipino Education Center, Bryant Elementary, Cesar Chavez Elementary, Buena Vista Child Care at St. Peter's Elementary, Sanchez Elementary, Mission Education Center; and homeless family service center, Larkin Street Youth Services.

Check out our showcase and stay tuned for more to come!

Hello friends of Root Division!

First and foremost, thank you for being a part of our community! Our team has been adjusting to the changes and rolling with the punches these past few weeks. While we don’t know what the future holds, we are still a group of fiercely positive, creative problem-solvers!

A few ways to stay inspired while we must be socially-distanced:

ENJOY ART AT HOME

We have been posting about each and every artist in our MFA Never 2020 exhibition on our social media channels.

Next up are features on our Studio Artists, including their artwork, their stories, their service, as well as an opportunity to support them directly via our Sponsor an Artist campaign.

Likewise, see what’s for sale in our online store -- from paintings and photographs to prints and catalogs.

GET CREATIVE AT HOME

We are gearing up some online offerings for all ages, but in the meantime you can:

Download, print, & get colorful with pages from Root Division’s Coloring Book. Each week we'll be releasing more pages that showcase of our unique and diverse roster of RD Studio Artists.

Sign up for a one-on-one art class / private art lesson with one of our Studio Artists or Alums. Choose from drawing, water based media, acrylics, and more!

Wednesday, March 19, 2020

Hello friends of Root Division! With all that has happened over the last two weeks, it will likely not come as a surprise that TASTE 2020 will not be happening on Thursday, April 16. Based on the Shelter in Place mandate as well as the CDC’s recommendation to cancel gatherings over 50 people, it is clearly not possible to host you for this event any time soon. Because the extent of the current crisis—the timeline in particular—is not yet clear, we are currently in a holding pattern for a rescheduled date.

We have been putting together a truly fantastic, artfully-inspired experience for you -- with generous support from 20 chefs/ mixologists and over 70 other local businesses. We want to take this opportunity to encourage you to support these businesses and restaurants in whatever appropriately social-distanced way that you can -- order delivery, buy gift cards, schedule a private event for later in the year -- anything that will reciprocate and pay forward their incredible generosity.

If you have already purchased tickets or confirmed as a sponsor, we will be in touch shortly with more details. In the meantime, we are working hard to keep our team safe and our arts ecosystem healthy. We would love your support in any shape or size that you can send through the internet! Donate today to help us keep doing what we do best: empowering artists, promoting community service, inspiring youth, and enriching the Bay Area through the visual arts.

Thanks for your patience, understanding, and continued support during this unprecedented time.

Per the City & County of San Francisco’s Shelter in Place mandate, Root Division’s office and gallery are closed through April 7 or until further notice, and the Spring 2020 classes have been cancelled. The Root Division staff team is working remotely, and general inquiries can be sent to info@rootdivision.org.

In the meantime, we are working hard to keep our team safe and our arts ecosystem healthy. We’ll have updates available for you on this page, and we hope to have the Summer 2020 classes online by April 1. We would love your support in any shape or size that you can send through the internet! Donate today to help us keep doing what we do best: empowering artists, promoting community service, inspiring youth, and enriching the Bay Area through the visual arts.

Thanks for your patience, understanding, and continued support during this unprecedented time.
