Julie Sutherland

Julie Sutherland’s work consists of paintings and drawings that use pre-existing visual material to examine issues of power, violence, gender, patriotism and the American West. Her sources range from historic American portraiture, war and war trial photography, to patterns, textiles, and various other decorative forms. One painting series combines official portraits of Presidents and First Ladies into androgynous a-historical figures while a drawing series looks at the communication of atrocity through its problematic media depictions. She has shown her work at Root Division, The National Queer Arts Festival, the Santa Fe Art Institute and is included in the Drawing Center’s Viewing Program. She has received a residency fellowship from the Santa Fe Art Institute and was an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center. Born in Sacramento, CA, Julie received her BA in Studio Art and Art History from Mills College and currently lives in San Francisco.
