CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Lay of the Land (working title)

Root Division invites artists working in all media to submit work for Lay of the Land (working title), to be presented at Root Division in June-July 2025.

Art about landscape has long played a role in how we imagine the world around us. At times, artists have envisioned a pristine, immaculate wild. At other times, the curtain is pulled back to reveal the inherent political strategies woven into such imaginings.

Lay of the Land (working title) is a group exhibition comprising works by Bay Area-based artists who are grappling with the constructed visions of nature through a variety of mediums, methodologies, and perspectives. For this open call, our curatorial team is seeking artists whose work examines the unseen or overlooked—those aspects of nature that are amorphous, invisible, and/or fleeting—to explore alternative approaches to understanding space, place, and environment.

Lay of the Land is curated by Naomi Alessandra Schultz, Julianna Heller, and Eleanor Scholz

Exhibition dates: June 14 – July 26, 2025
2nd Saturday Opening Reception: June 14, 2025
