Root Division is proud to present MFA Now 2019, our biennial juried exhibition and archive publication featuring the works of MFA candidates at 9 of the top Bay Area institutions.
Now in its sixth iteration, the MFA Now project provides a platform for looking at Bay Area artists and institutions in order to promote dialogue between programs and to archive current art-making practices and models. This year's exhibition will be juried by Maria Jenson, Executive Director, SOMArts.
This year’s exhibition will include the work of twenty five artists. Selected based on a single image and artist statement, the works included in this exhibition display a quality of content and execution that is indicative of the rigor of advanced art degree programs. Works range in media from large scale installation, to video, sculpture, photography and painting. This exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the developing practices of candidates prior to their thesis presentations.
MFA programs include: California College of the Arts, Mills College, San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley, University of California, Davis, and University of California, Santa Cruz.

About the MFA Now 2019 Archive Project:
The MFA Now 2019 Archive is an inclusionary publication of all eligible MFA candidates set to be released in March 2019. All artists who submit to the MFA NOW 2019 exhibition will be featured in this archive. The book includes a full page dedicated to each contributing MFA candidate and a compilation of essays by faculty, Root Division staff, and the exhibition juror, serving to navigate the contemporary moment in Bay Area MFA programs and find connections between the artists and institutions.
MFA Now is free, open to the public, and includes a Creative Station - all ages art activities hosted in our classroom during the 2nd Saturday opening reception.
