Just Another June

Curated by Victoria Cheng, Chase Irvin, Josie Licavoli, Maya Salcido White, and Lonnie Taylor.

Root Division invites artists working in all media to submit work for Just Another June, to be presented at Root Division in June 2024.

Taking inspiration from the Bell Hooks quote: “Queer’ not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but ‘queer’ as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

This show invites artists who explore the day-to-day of queerness– queerness in the mundane, queerness in the ordinary, queerness in mere existence, expansive queerness, quiet queerness, and beyond. The curatorial vision for the exhibition is to shift the focus away from heteronormative displays of queer lifestyles, and highlight a more nuanced yet familiar themes such as: platonic intimacy, chosen family, polyamorous parenthood, everyday subversive acts, and the relationship (and lack thereof) between gender expression and sexual preference. This is a celebration of just “being”.

The curators welcome all forms of art. Artists can use this call as a chance to experiment; multimedia, archival, immersive and spatially playful pieces are highly encouraged.
