2nd Saturday June 2024: Just Another June

Registration is closed for this event

Just Another June is curated by Root Division Studio Artists Victoria Cheng, Chase Irvin, Josie Licavoli, Maya Salcido White, and Lonnie Taylor.

This exhibition is a playful celebration of queerness through experimentation, abstraction, conceptual thought, and merit in all media. Taking inspiration from the bell hooks quote: “Queer’ not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but ‘queer’ as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”

Just Another June explores the day-to-day of queerness– queerness in the mundane, queerness in the ordinary, queerness in mere existence, expansive queerness, quiet queerness, and beyond. Shifting the focus away from heteronormative displays of queer lifestyles, this show highlights nuanced yet familiar themes such as platonic intimacy, chosen family, everyday subversive acts, and the relationship (and lack thereof) between gender expression and sexual preference. This is a celebration of just “being.”

Also on view in the Frank-Ratchye Project Space is Pamana – new works by Filipinx Teaching Fellow and Studio Artist, Josie Licavoli.
