I'm Maya, a mixed Xicanx artist and educator from California and Texas. I mainly work in linocut and risograph printmaking, and continue to play around with materials and styles to explore storytelling, my culture, and my families. Through my work, I connect to the natural world and to those who came before me, illustrate the strength within my communities, and navigate my own emotions, relationships, and identities.
I was introduced to linocut printmaking in 2019 through the Queer Ancestors Project, a free, 6 month-long workshop exploring queer and trans history that led me to value accessible arts education. I later incorporated risograph printing into my practice and continue to play around with new materials and styles. Through my work, I explore my connection to the natural world and to those who came before me, illustrate the strength within my communities, and navigate my own emotions, relationships, and identities.
