Artist Statement

My mixed-media art practice focuses on my sweetest dreams and memories. I am a lesbian who grew up in a Mexican American Catholic household and struggled to express myself due to lack of queer representation. I used to heavily perform femininity, and as I have slowly dropped the act over the past few years it has felt like a rebirth. My work embraces those multiplicities and contradictions of my identity, acknowledging that many things can be true at the same time. My art is a love letter to my authentic self and where I come from, covering themes of queerness, familial and romantic bonds, and acts of love. I explore these themes using memories, color theory and different media to convey emotions that run deep. My work often finds its way back to portraiture, focusing on eyes and hands, what I believe to be the most beautiful and expressive features. The process is urgent yet meditative, a ritual of self-soothing and care.
