Bio

Richard Cheung is an oil abstract painter that lives and works in San Francisco. He is interested in making paintings that celebrate everyday objects, friendship, and moments. Through the use of multiple-layers, he is fascinated with mark-making and the colors, textures, and lines that could unfold on the painted surface.

Artist Statement

I find myself often loading up a brush and being very gestural, almost attacking the canvas. I’m a fast painter but my paintings are very slow to complete. Each successive layer acts as a guideline for what's to come or how I could react. What shapes do I erase, what colors should I amplify? My brush tends to go all over. I prefer not to have a systematic approach. It keeps me on my toes and keeps the marks I make more alive and true. On the subject matter, I return to the same motifs common in historical genres: cups, fruit, landscapes, figures. The paintings I make feel celebratory but also at times carry a feeling of lamentation. Things are fleeting and moments are transitory.
