Sammy Gripe is a sculptor, sound artist, art educator, and floral designer from the Bay Area, currently based in San Francisco. Experimenting with ceramics, textiles, and plaster, she creates whimsical objects that aim to fill a room the same way people do, using inspiration from people she has come to know and love. She has studied at the University of Oregon, Beaux-Arts de Paris, and San Francisco Art Institute where she earned a BFA in Sculpture in 2020.
I am interested in interpersonal relationships, how these relationships directly affect our quality of life, and the human desire for comfort and a sense of belonging. Recently, I have been working in ceramics to create characters that mimic the personalities I’ve encountered in my travels. Through sculpture and sound I explore the idea of uprooting oneself and creating community in unfamiliar environments, combining my inclination for vulnerability and human connection with my love for botanicals.
