Call for Artists: Let Me Be A Witness

Registration is closed for this event

Root Division invites artists to submit work for Let Me Be A Witness, to be presented at Root Division in San Francisco, California in March 2018.

Let Me Be A Witness is an exhibition of work that might be described as “witness art.”  Witness art is distinct in its qualities of observation, research, and as a respond to specific events in the world.   At times humorous and personal, and other times dire and political, Let Me Be A Witness invites artist to submit work in all genres and media.

From Tumblr photo blogs of daily routines to the activism of Black Lives Matter, the act of witnessing via social media has become a catalyst of social change by transforming passive observation to something bigger than the individual observer.  Drawing the title from a traditional response of African-American church-goers’ call to testify, Let Me Be a Witness will exhibit work that reflect a variety of topics that might otherwise never see the light of day. The curation will focus on art that ranges from the personal art-as-memoir to the socially conscious and political.

This call for entries is meant to complete a show that currently includes the work of Glenna Cole Allee, Amy Balkin, Shannon Carey, Cheryl Derricotte, Rodney Ewing, Lauren Hartman, William Rhodes, and Brandon Tauszik.
