Call for Artists: Diasporic Futurism

Registration is closed for this event

Root Division invites artists responding to themes of Afro- and Latinx-futurist aesthetics to apply for its upcoming exhibition entitled Diasporic Futurism curated by Leah King and Juan Carlos Rodriguez Rivera. The exhibition will be presented in July 2020 at Root Division.

Dreaming of alternative freedoms is a fundamental part of envisioning new realities for oppressed peoples. This exhibition was formed from the desire to look behind to create a new future that is free of sociopolitical struggle. This open call looks for artwork that embraces beauty, erotica, belonging, sex, and joy, while fully recognizing what has been shed in order to achieve liberation.

Applying artists should explore futurism as it relates to their personal history within and beyond forced diasporas using science fiction/fantasy, visual design, comics, immersive sound, textile, and video.

Diasporic Futurism will feature artists from throughout the Bay Area who are interrogating the definition of futurism as it relates to diasporic peoples’ movement.

Ultimately, Diasporic Futurism is grounded in the belief that in order to know where we are going, we must explore our past and use our imagination to make a brighter future.

Confirmed Artists include: Hal King, Tanna Tucker, Madame Bessie Snow, Leah King, Cristina Victor, Sofia Cordova, and Juan Carlos Rodriguez Rivera

Artists working in all mediums are welcome to apply.

Exhibition Dates: Jul 9, 2020 to Aug 8, 2020
