OPEN CALL FOR ARTISTS: THE TOOLS

Root Division invites artists working in all fields to submit work for an exhibition entitled The Tools.
The Tools is a look through the wrong end of the telescope, examining art as apparatus and instrument. The show will contain both implements artists have constructed in view of executing their work, along with work that itself functions as a tool.
Works considered for the show could be:
1. Utensils, models, devices, objects or systems crafted specifically to advance the artist’s working process.

2. Works that are themselves in dialogue with the function or aesthetic of tools.
The curator encourages artists who entertain a novel function for tools through a broad range of materials, media, and approaches.
The Tools is an investigation of the structure and support that underpin an artist’s production, and the ways that production may itself launch new approaches to critique, education, or expression. The show aims to push against the notion of tool as a primarily physical aid. In the words of Robert Irwin, “The act of art is a tool for extended consciousness."
This call for entries is meant to complete a show that currently includes the work of 6 artists.

Deadline for Submission: Monday, October 28, 2013
Email submissions can be sent to submissions@rootdivision.org. Submissions will also be accepted via USPS & can be mailed to: Root Division, Attn: The Tools, 3175 17th Street, SF, CA 94110. If your submission is mailed, we prefer that all documents are saved as either word docs (.doc) or PDFs (.pdf) and burned to a CD with your images rather than printed.
Images: Four images (jpgs, 1200px in largest dimension) labeled to correspond with the inventory numbers listed on application (i.e. 01_LastName). If there is video it should be submitted as a still and as a link to a web-hosted video viewer.

Submission Fee
Please note that the $10 fee must be on file by 10/28/2013 for the email submission to be considered. E-payment can be made via the form below, or submit a $10 check/money order made payable to Root Division.
