Venue: 1131 Mission Street

Recast, a solo project by artist Cathy Lu, is an exploration of how Eastern art imagery is seen and understood in the U.S. The ceramic based sculptures are playful alterations of objects we associate with East Asian culture, from places like the Asian Art Museum, Chinatown trinket shops and nail salons. These objects question the assumptions we make about the authenticity of culture and its objects and our relationship to contemporary identity. This solo project is presented with the support of an Individual Artist Commission Grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission. This project is presented at Root Division as part of Commodity Culture, a two-month exploration into consumerism and cultural expression in the Bay Area.
