Ritual of Myth Making: Reclaim is an invitation to participate in ceremony. The exhibition will take viewers on a journey through time and space, exploring multiple Indigenous pasts, presents, and futures, resulting in a collective cycle of healing that embraces beauty, death, release, and abundance.
Myth making and ritual are central to Indigenous cosmology. These practices expand across time and space from Turtle Island to Abya Yala (the Western Hemisphere), becoming tools for collective liberation that (re)imagine and (re)create the world we live in. Through myth making, narratives are created and shifted that change self, community, and culture.
The artworks featured and co-created with community members are one of the many ways Indigenous Past (Indigenous Traditions) and Future (Indigenous Futurism) are merged, highlighting the hybrid forms of existing Indigenous people, both locally in California and across the world.
The journey begins with the detailed ancestral weavings of Rusby Marisol Tum Xinico (Maya Kaqchikel) and the bold graphic prints of Sean Guerra (Chicanx). Next, viewers will pass through the fertile depths of the earth as they experience the film Chaac and Yum, a reimagined contemporary romantic narrative of Chaac, the Mayan deity of Rain, and Yum, the Mayan deity of corn, by Roberto Fatal, Daniel Arizmendi, Xav S-F (Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Yaqui). Finally, viewers will make their way through the present, through the experience of death with the works of Tz’utu Kan (Maya Tz’utujil) and Polaris Castillo (Nahua/Mexikah), releasing colonialism and systemic white supremacy and transmuting the pain through ancestral practices, finding the way in the future. The future is illuminated by Alvaro Tzaj Yotz’s (Maya Tz’utujil) vivid painting Ixkan, and world building installations by Shreya Shankar. Looking to the colors, textures, faces, and sounds that indigenous relatives imagined helps to find the path to collective liberation. Ritual of Myth Making: Reclaim centers healing, creates expansiveness, and offers visions of the future for Indigenous peoples.

*The Community Ceremonies are a space for BIPOC participants. Any and all others are invited to join the public Second Saturday Opening Reception on Feb. 11, 2023. The Community Opening Ceremony, which will take place in person, will include a virtual blessing in English and Spanish with Nan Amalia (Kaqchikel) who will bless the exhibition, artists, and ceremony participants. The Community Closing Ceremony, which will take place in person, will feature a virtual cacao ceremony with Nana Miriam (Tz’utujil). Cacao will be provided to share in community. Participants are asked to bring their own mugs.

Esta es tu invitación para participar en la ceremonia Ritual de Creación de Mitos: Reclamación. La exposición transportará a la audiencia en un viaje a través del tiempo y el espacio, explorando así la multiplicidad de pasados, presentes y futuros de las comunidades Indígenas, y teniendo como resultado un circulo colectivo de sanación que acepta e incorpora la belleza, la abundancia, la muerte y el poder dejar ir.
La creación de mitos y los rituales son centrales en la cosmología Indígena. Estas practicas se expanden a través del tiempo y el espacio desde Isla Tortuga hasta Abya Yala (en el Hemisferio Oeste), convirtiéndose así en herramientas de liberación colectiva que permiten re-imaginar y recrear el mundo en que vivimos. Por medio de la creación del mito, se crean e intercambian narrativas que hacen cambiar al individuo, a la comunidad, y a la cultura.
El arte aquí presentado y creado junto con miembros de la comunidad es un buen ejemplo de como el Pasado Indígena (Tradiciones Indígenas) y su Futuro (Futurismo Indígena) convergen, destacando los aspectos híbridos de la cultura Indígena actual, tanto localmente en California como alrededor del mundo.
Este viaje comienza con los detallados tejidos ancestrales de Rusby Marisol Tum Xinico (Maya Kaqchikel) y los impresionantes grabados de Sean Guerra (Chicanx). Seguidamente, el publico pasará por las profundidades fértiles de la Tierra viendo y experimentando la película Chaac and Yum de Roberto Fatal, Daniel Arizmendi, Xav S-F (Tzeltal, Tzotzil, Yaqui). Es una narrativa romántica contemporánea re-imaginada acerca de Chaac, la deidad Maya de la lluvia, y Yum, la deidad Maya del maíz. Finalmente, el público pasará a través del presente, por medio de una experiencia de muerte con la obra de Tz’utu Kan (Maya Tz’utujil) y Polaris Castillo (Nahua/Mexikah), deshaciéndose del colonialismo y la sistemática supremacía blanca, y transmutando el dolor por medio de practicas ancestrales, logrando así llegar al futuro. El futuro esta iluminado por la vivida pintura “Ixhan” de Alvaro Tzaj Yotz’s (Maya Tz’utujil) y las instalaciones de construcción de mundo de Shreya 360. Observar los colores, las texturas, las caras y sonidos que imaginaron los parientes indígenas ayuda a encontrar el camino hacia la liberación colectiva. Ritual de Creación de Mitos: Reclamación facilita la sanación, crea expansividad, y ofrece visiones del futuro para la comunidad Indígena.
