Introductions 2022

Root Division presents Introductions 2022, the 16th iteration of our annual juried exhibition. The Introductions exhibition showcases the talent of twelve emerging artists, highlighting artists without gallery representation in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Aik Brown: Layered Life

The Frank Ratchye Project Space presents Layered Life by Root Division Studio Artist Aik Brown. The artworks in Layered Life are intuitively created using acrylic paint in an abstract graffiti style. The artist joyfully composes colorful botanical scenes, exploring with color and spray paint to create movement, layers, and texture. 

MATRIX

MATRIX, curated by Tracy Ren, centers the collective learning, healing and dreaming of artists who deviate from hegemonic norms. The exhibition is an invitation to these artists to create, heal, nourish themselves and one another, dream of prospective futures, and exhibit their works without descriptive constraints or limitations.

Black Warrior Mentorship Project & Fellowship Exhibition

As part of Root Division’s 20-Year Celebration, this exhibition presents 7 Studios Fellows and features the Black Warrior Mentorship Project, a culminating show from Aambr Newsome, the 2021–22 Bay Area Black Artist Studio Fellow. 

20-YR Performance

This event will feature performances and interactive projects by over a dozen Root Division Studio Artists and Alums.

New Growth: Bright Futures

New Growth showcases student artwork created throughout Root Division’s free after-school Youth Education Program. This year we’re partnering with a collective of youth-centered organizations to present dynamic live performances alongside hands-on all-ages art making activities.

20-Year: Current Studio Artist Showcase

On view in the Frank-Ratchye Project Space as part of Root Division’s 20-Year Anniversary Celebration, will be works by our current Studio Artist cohort, offering a window into the diversity of media and practices happening onsite.
