Nathan W. Suter
1973-2025
Root Division is heartbroken over the unexpected loss of one of its co-founders Nathan Suter, who died suddenly of a heart attack on May 13, 2025.
Along with friends and SFAI colleagues Mitch Temple and Dennis McNulty, Nathan’s care, compassion, and tenacity brought Root Division from an idea to an actuality in 2002. After passing the torch and relocating to Vermont in 2006, Nathan remained involved as an Emeritus Member of Root Division’s Board of Directors for almost two decades.
Nathan was kind, passionate, and generous of spirit. He worked tirelessly to create a more socially just world–in the Bay Area, in his communities in Vermont, and far beyond. Nathan was a talented artist in his own right, an unrelenting advocate for other artists, and a devoted supporter of social justice causes–not only in words, but in devoted on-the-ground actions. Root Division’s staff, board, and community of artists whose lives he touched, mourn his loss.
Calling hours for Nathan were held May 20, 2025 at Guare & Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier, VT, with a virtual space to collect memories and condolences. Friends created a GoFundMe page to support Nathan Suter’s family in this very unexpected and devastating life turn. We also have compiled a list of the charities Nathan loved and supported if you would like to donate in his honor:
Root Division, San Francisco, CA
Eastside College Preparatory School, Palo Alto, CA
The Current (formerly Helen Day Art Center), Stowe, VT
In Situ Polyculture Commons, VT
Migrant Justice, Burlington, VT
Peace & Justice Center, Burlington, VT
We will continue the celebration of Nathan’s life and honor his memory in a Bay Area memorial event in the summer of 2025 (date TBD).
With love and care,
